Halloween Socks

When I went to this year’s Knit City Vancouver (an annual big fibre event in Vancouver) in October, I bought two skeins of self-striping sock yarn from The Cozy Knitter. One is called Haunted, and the other is Gingerbread House. You can probably guess from their name—it’s halloween and Christmas themed colourways. I got them both on their Bliss base which is 80 % superwash merino 20% nylon, and comes in a set of 85g stripes and 30g mini semi-solid skeins.

I’m a little late to share this pair, but I was able to finish them on time, just before halloween.

I love this colourway! The combination of the almost-black dark grey, purple, yellow, orange, and medium grey makes the perfect halloween inspired socks. I’m really happy I chose this particular colourway especially because I don’t have any hand-knit socks that are similar to this colour combo!

I used Vanilla Sock with Gusset & Choice of Heel by Jo Torr for my pattern reference again. Because I really like using a toe-up pattern with self-striping yarn!

I love love love the colourway and how it stripes. One thing I’m not sure about this yarn yet is that it feels a bit scratchy than my other hand-knit socks. But it could be because of this dry weather (my skin has been super sensitive because of the extreme dryness) or maybe because I might have knit up this pair a little bit too snag.

Update* I have been wearing these often ever since, and they’ve softened up! The yarn still feels more sturdy than some other sock yarns, but my socks aren’t itchy anymore. I’m also glad that they were a bit snag in the beginning—as they always stretch out over time, they fit great now.

It’s certainly wearable (they seem to feel better on my skin when I make sure my legs are moisturized too), and they probably will get softer and softer after each wash, so I’m not concerned. I’ve already washed a couple of times and the great news is—they haven’t bled at all! I’m always nervous when I wash self-striping yarn with contrasty colours for the first time. Even after two washes, the socks came out without any bleed and the striping is crisp! Yay!
