Polka Dot Whale

I recently bought Simply Sewing magazine for the first time.

The whale plushies (you can see them on the top right corner of the cover) caught my eyes.

They're so adorable! The dress pattern that came with the magazine was also a bonus.

They kind of look like they’re smiling, don’t they?

The whale pattern came with the magazine along with a simple instruction.

This is my first time making a plushie, so I used a regular cotton fabric instead of fur fabric. I couldn’t tell if the samples in the magazine were machine-sewn or hand-sewn. But I think traditionally plushies are sewn by hand, so that’s what I did.

He’s so cute! I really like the polka-dot fabric I chose as the main fabric.

I’m so impressed with this pattern. I’m not good at pattern drafting especially when it comes to making 3D things into 2D and then put them back into 3D… Headaches, right?! So I really appreciate people with the talent to draft patterns like this!

This is the other side. I didn’t sew the curve right, and his smile is a bit stiff.

I used buttons I had in my stash as I didn’t have proper safety eyes. They’re okay but I would use proper ones if I were to make one for small children.

If you’re good at making dolls and plushies, I think you can hack this pattern to make Koi fish or mermaids!

He’s kinda big!

It was fun making a stuffed toy! I really enjoyed it.

Simply Sewing magazine seems to have a cute plushie pattern on every issue. I'm gonna have to check it out every issue just for that!
