Denim Pinafore and Big Collar Top
Since I loved my black corduroy pinafore, I made another one with more versatile (season-wise) fabric.
I made the black corduroy one back in fall 2022, and I made this one either at the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023 (meaning it took me more than a half year to write about it!)
Pattern: Ora Pinafore by Soften Studio
Fabric: Cotton denim chambray from Rick Rack
This time I used a cotton denim chambray; I believe “denim” and “chambray” have different types of weave construction, but since the product was called denim chambray, I’m just gonna call this a denim pinafore to make it simpler.
It’s got a plain weave as apposed to a diagonal twill weave of denim. It’s fully opaque yet feels light with some drape.
I added a lining just like my previous one, even though the fabric is fully opaque. I’d pair this with tights in fall/winter, so I wanted a lining to avoid tights sticking to the skirt.
The front and the back of the Ora Pinafore looks almost identical, so I added a little machine embroidery again to distinguish which is which. (The embroidery is inside where you can’t see from outside.)
I made a top to pair with this pinafore, and love how these look together.
This cotton lawn has been in my stash for a while (it’s “Lindley Lawn by Ruby Star Society). I love the colour and the print, but I was having a hard time deciding what to make with it as this colour combo is quite out there.
But with a pinafore, it became a lot more wearable!
The base of the pattern for the top is the same as the one I used for the leopard print top. I did re-draft the collar pattern pieces though.
I knew the big collar (with tiny ruffles!) would look really cute with this fabric. It’s a perfect match for the pinafore as well.
The coral button is from my stash and I’m very pleased with the colour I chose.
If you look closer you’d notice that the back hem of the top is slightly longer than the front.
Now that the straight cut / wide leg pants are more trendy than skinny pants, I like my tops to sit a little higher (but not as short as cropped.)
“Shorter in the front and slightly longer in the back” seems to work pretty well for me.
The big ruffled collar, vividly coloured fabric, and elasticated cuffs (which creates more ruffles)…Did I accidentally make a clown blouse? Maybe. But either way, I really love it!
I highly recommend the Ora Pinafore pattern. It’s relaxed, casual, and comfortable while maintaining chicness = perfect!
I’m really pleased with how these turned out; something I can wear through out the year (except for a really hot summer day probably.)
