Kalle Shirt in Viscose Denim
Happy April!
I'm seeing so many cherry blossom (Sakura) photos posted by friends living in Japan. We don't have Sakura trees where I live in Canada, so I'm a bit jealous! We just had a cold Easter long weekend. It's been -10 to -20 ℃ at night and morning and I see some snow flakes on this week's forecast...
Even so, I started to plan some warmer weather clothes sewing in my head! We don't really have much of spring (really, May is like one day it's winter and snowing and the next day is summer with plus 25 ℃!), and we have a short summer. So if I want to get that summer sewing done before it's fall again, I need to start planning ahead!
I've recently purchased a few Closet Core Patterns from Blackbird Fabrics. I always prefer printed patterns over PDF, especially when the packaging is so gorgeous like Closet Core patterns.
I tried Kalle Shirt and Shirtdress pattern this time, with the sleeve pattern expansion. This is my second time using Closet Core Patterns (my first was Morgan Jeans), and I really liked it.
The instruction that comes with the pattern is good, but the sewalong on their blog made it extra clear. I really appreciate when indie designers provide tutorials and sewalongs.
I bought the fabric from Blackbird Fabrics as well. It's viscose denim and is 100% rayon. I'm no sure what "viscose denim" exactly is, my guess is it's dyed and woven like denim? Maybe its colour will slowly fade like denim jeans. Anyway, I really like this fabric! It's thick enough that it's opaque and has nice weight to it, but it's soft and drapey at the same time!
I made a shirt length (version B) with regular button bands from version C.
Changes I made:
Shortened the sleeves and the cuffs
Shortened the back hem
Button placement
Just some simple and easy changes!
This was my first time sewing classic tower placket on sleeves and I was nervous about it, but the instruction really helped. The process was actually pretty simple!
I omitted buttons on the sleeve plackets because I didn't have the same buttons in a smaller size but I think it'll work just fine.
I love the curve on the hem, it's so stylish!
The length is perfect with leggings, and skinny pants!
Shirt making requires more time and effort (for me at least), because there're many pieces to put together and also requires more skill to sew like collar and sleeve plackets.
But I love the result! Classic shirts are the wardrobe staple, it's something I can wear often and for a long time.
I'd love to make another Kalle shirt, especially one for summer with short sleeves!
