Black Morris Blazer

I’ve been wanting to make a Morris Blazer by Grainline Studio for quite some time. In fact, I bought the pattern back in 2018!

Morris is a light weight unlined jacket that is both simple and interesting. The pattern calls for fabric with a bit of stretch.

Pattern: Morris Blazer by Grainline Studio

Fabric: Black ponte knit

What I liked about this jacket are:

  • Simple

  • Light weight (perfect transitional season jacket)

  • The length that goes well with dresses as well as pants

  • Interesting shapes of the hem and the shawl collar

I was a little worried about the shawl collar construction at first (shawl collar and notched collar are intimidating to sew!) but it came together quickly and was fairly straight forward.

I really like this jacket and I’m very pleased with the result!

The only thing I didn’t realize was that I don’t actually have many things in my closet at the moment that go well with this jacket…

This jacket has pretty narrow, slim sleeves (maybe I could have gone up a size?). If you’re wearing it over a sleeveless top, it’s fine, but I don’t really wear sleeveless tops.

I usually give generous amount of ease to my short sleeves, so that would be tricky to squeeze into these slim sleeves. (Anyone else don’t enjoy straightening out short sleeves inside of slim jacket sleeves?)

So the best option for me to wear underneath this jacket would be lightweight (and preferably slippery fabric like rayon, viscose) long sleeves.

In the past couple of years, I’ve gotten rid of a lot of those dresses and tops because they became too big.

But that’s ok, because I’ve got some rayon and viscose fabrics in my stash waiting to become dresses/tops eventually!

Here I paired it with a RTW rayon shirt. It’s an over-sized shirt, so it might not look perfect with, but I like it!

I shortened the bodice just a bit, but I tried to leave the enough length that I can wear with pants too!

This one I paired with the polka dot dress.

I actually didn’t shortened the sleeves, so that I can have full length, instead of the bracelet length.

I’m really excited about this jacket, I love how clean and sophisticated it looks! I can’t wait to make more clothes that would go well with it.
