Shawl Collar Sweater Jacket

Shawl Collar Sweater Jacket

It's been almost a month since the last blog post! Meanwhile the work project that I was a part of has launched and I'll be able to share it with you here very soon.

We already got snow twice this season (didn't stay, it melted away quickly) and the beautiful autumn leaves are falling off from the trees. The photo below was taken a week ago when the trees were all pretty in yellow, now they're almost naked. I wish fall stayed longer here...

My first fall project of the year is a sweater jacket that I'm going to talk about today.

I made a couple of fall jackets last year (see here and here) and they have been very useful in my wardrobe. One down side is that I made both to pair with dresses, so they're pretty cropped length-wise. I wanted something longer that I can wear with pants or tunic, so that's what I made this time!

I used Butterick B6251, shawl collar sweater jacket and coat pattern which I think is the same as B6406 but B6251 comes with more variations.

使ったのはButterick B6251、ニット生地で作るヘチマカラーのジャケット/コートです。おそらくB6406と同じ型紙だと思うのですが、私が使ったB6251の方がバリエーションが多いです。

I used version B with A's length, and omitted the back button tab.

Please excuse the wrinkles... after I finished sewing it I put it away in the closet folded and I was too lazy to iron it out before photographing it :P

I used a sweater knit and interfacing as instructed, but it feels like it's too drapey. I think a heaver weight knit like ponte would have been better for this pattern.

I had a hard time sewing it neatly, because I don't have a lot of practice sewing knits and only have a (cheap) regular sewing machine... I originally wanted to use buttons instead of snap fasteners, but I just didn't think I could sew clean button holes with this fabric, so I hand-sewed snap fasteners.

This project was totally a confidence crusher for me, I'm not really happy with the finishing. Nonetheless, I think this piece would be pretty handy for fall and spring, even on cool summer nights.

あちこち上手に縫えず、自信喪失する1着となりました。笑 それでも、春秋に活躍しそうな気軽に羽織れるものにはなったかな。夏の肌寒い夜にも良さそう。

Really like the shaped hem line on this pattern!

Eventually, when I have more confidence in knit sewing, I'd like to make another one in a different fabric. For now, this one will keep me warm on fall walks!

I finished a few sewing projects in the last couple of weeks, so I'm going to update my blog more often this month! Have a happy Thanksgiving day weekend, fellow Canadians and those who celebrate it!
