White Baby Blanket

Last month, my sister and her husband welcomed their baby daughter! She’s brought so much joy to our family already.

My whole family lives in Japan, and because the pandemic, I’m not sure when I can visit them next. (For those of you who are new to my blog, I’m an expat who lives in Canada, originally from Japan.)

I’m a bit sad that I can’t see my niece when she’s a new born, and that I can’t help out my sister by her side. But that doesn’t mean I can’t do anything for them, right?

So this auntie knit up a baby blanket for her baby niece!

Pattern: Valley of Lilies Baby Blanket by Sherri Hazen

Yarn: Juniper Moon Farm Cumulus 01 Pearl

I’m so in love with this lily of the valley pattern! It’s so elegant and beautiful. It looks intricate but it was actually pretty simple to follow and was really enjoyable to knit!

I think this stitching is such a pretty pattern for a blanket.

As for the yarn, Juniper Moon farm Cumulus is so great for a baby project. It’s 94% Mako cotton and 6% nylon.

Mako cotton is one of the most luxury kinds of cotton there is, and this yarn feels like a dream. It’s worsted weight, so from photos, it might look thick and sturdy. But in reality, it has a nice drape and the softest hand feel. Seriously, this is one of the softest cotton yarn I’ve ever touched.

6% of nylon add just the right amount of the strength and the lightness, I think—I washed my swatch and it kept the shape nicely.

I think the edging stitch is called moss stitch, am I right? I quite like moss stitch.

The straight lines created by the lily of the valley pattern looks so neat and it feels so satisfying!

My sister chose the colour—she wanted natural white (that is not bleached white.) White for babies? You might have wandered. This blanket isn’t for everyday-use, but rather, ceremonial and a keepsake. And cream colour looks beautiful for that, I think!

I had some left over yarn, and since she was born in November, I thought she would need a hat to keep her head warm. (As it turned out, she has A LOT of hair already!)

Baby/kids hats with ears are so adorable, don’t you think?

I was so amazed at how small new born baby hats are.. it’s so tiny!

Both the blanket and hat safely made it to Japan, just before my niece was born.

My family took some photos and sent them to me! This photo makes me so happy. This sweet little baby is definitely the greatest and the happiest news of 2020 to our family!

I’m so excited to make some dresses and cute sweaters for her in the future. What a joy to be able to witness a baby grow up!
