Miniature House

When I was in Japan (my home) in November, I snapped some photos of this miniature house I made as a kid!

I can't take all the credit for making this house though, I was only about 10-12 years old when I made it. So my mom helped me A LOT!

This house has two floors with a skylight! It's not pictured but also has a plastic cover in the front to avoid collecting dust.

Building the house was probably the most difficult part of all because we had to be really precise otherwise it wouldn't stand firmly.

We had a hard time figuring out how to make the roof stable, so my grandpa gave us some advice based on how the real houses are constructed. He was really good at carpentry and had built a swing, a slide, a shed and so on.

This mini house holds a lot of memory of my family—a summer I spent making a house with my mom and my grandpa.

Close up of the first floor (photo above). It has a window too!

My mom and I went to a DIY store often while making this house. I had no idea they had such interesting products that are perfect for miniature making like some sort of planks that can be cut with a regular utility knife or wood flooring looking sticker sheet!

The second floor.

We referenced a lot of miniature making books for furniture and interior ideas. They had really neat ideas, for example, the leg of the lamp on the second floor is made with a cap of liquid bottle!

And the tube-shaped case by the book shelf on the first floor is made of plastic film case. (Film cameras are still really common back then!)

Adding a skylight was my mom’s idea, I’m sure. I love this detail!

It's been almost 20 years since my mom and I made this house, but it still stands on the same spot in my grandma's house ever since.

I now make dress just like this one, but in a real-life size!

I would really love to get into miniature making again sometime. They're so adorable!
