Floral Swing Tank Top
Since the pandemic started, I only got one haircut. My hair is getting long and I’ve decided that this is a really good opportunity to do the hair donation. I think I still need to grow it out a few more centimetres, but can’t wait to do it.
If you have any recommendations on which organization I should send my hair to, please let me know! I’d appreciate it if you could share any tips I should know beforehand, too.
In my spring/summer sewing plan, I listed that I wanted to make a sleeveless top with this liberty fabric called Thorpe.
Liberty Tana lawns are so dreamy, hence it’s not cheap. So I wanted to test out the pattern with more affordable fabric before I cut into my Liberty.
I purchased this cotton voile from Blackbird Fabrics, back in May. The weight and the feel are pretty similar to lawn; lightweight, breezy, and soft.
I used Willow pattern by Grainline Studio as my pattern base with some modifications.
First I closed (removed) the bust darts and by doing that, it opened up the bottom. That adds some flare to the bodice already, but I gave it some additional volume to the hem to make it really swingy.
Instead of the wide hem as instructed in the pattern, I did narrower hem.
This hack gave it a nice swing and volume that I wanted. I’m very happy with how it all went! The armholes probably could have been a little smaller, though.
I actually made this top in June to wear it for my second dose of COVID-19 vaccine appointment. It was a hot day, so this top was the perfect thing to wear for the occasion.
This cotton voile is really cute! I don’t think these photos do justice, it’s even cuter in person!
After making my top, I had just enough left over to make a little person clothing…
So I made a matching dress and bloomers for my niece. The bloomer pattern is from a Japanese sewing book, and the dress pattern is Raleigh romper & dress by Blank Slate Patterns.
My sister sent me a photo of my niece wearing them, and she looked adorable! (I forgot to ask for a permission, so won’t be sharing that photo here.)
All the time while I was sewing them, I couldn’t believe that someone can fit into such tiny clothes, but they fit her perfectly!
This swing top turned out nicely and it is nice to have one woven tank top in my closet for summer, but I don’t think I need two of them at the moment. I’m going to make a different type of top with my Liberty Thorpe fabric that is more suited for fall!
