Brown Dot Shirt Dress

If you’re on Instagram and love retro/vintage style (especially the cinema fashion from the 50s through 60s), you might have heard of moipon who is a sewing influencer.

She and a Japanese fabric shop called fabric bird collaborated to create some special fabric that are perfect for making garments.

They’ve made two bigger polka dot fabrics several years ago, and this year they just released smaller polka dots.

A few years ago, I purchased the bigger polka dots in both brown and navy. The base is very light weight cotton (the weight is similar to Liberty’s Tana Lawn) with silk-like sheen. (I’m not sure if these are cotton sateen, but they do look similar to it.)

I don’t think these photos do justice to show off the sheen but it’s beautiful! It’s not like the polyester shininess and slipperiness. It’s more subtle and more classy (in my opinion.)

The colour is almost like orange-brown; lighter and bright.

I decided to use my favourite pattern from this season, Darling Ranges, for the bodice and the sleeves.

Pattern: Megan Nielsen Darling Ranges (The curve size: 14-30 is also available.)

For more info on this pattern and the modifications I made, please check out my “Chasing Daisies Dress” post.

For the camp collar (open shirt collar) pieces, I used “Gilbert Top” pattern by Helen’s Closet Patterns.

I think these two patterns went together very nicely!

The skirt pattern is self-drafted; this time I made a flared skirt with a subtle gathers (and without the tiered pieces.)

I love a big gathered skirt, but this flared style is also elegant.

The buttons are off-white shell buttons that I got from Japan few years ago.

They are a perfect match for this polka dot print, don’t you think?

This light weight cotton makes such a comfortable wear, especially for the summer. It’s really soft and smooth.

Because it’s light, I’d wear a slip or something of similar underneath (as this dress is unlined), but even then it’s still breathable and light!

I’m really happy with the fabric and the pattern choice I made for this dress!

I never wore much of brown/camel colours before, but this year I’m really into those colour palette. It’s fun to see my closet accumulating new colours.

I’ve been practicing on drawing (especially the digital drawling), so I tried to draw this dress!

It’s not a self-portrait but I wanted to draw a somewhat realistic human figure, rather than the fashion illustrations we often see that have unrealistic proportions.

I love the water colour style brush I got for my procreate app; I’ve been enjoying using them!
